Peace Voter Group Ready For 2006
ST. LOUIS—Coming off a 2004 election that saw dozens of its endorsed House and Senate candidates win Congressional seats, PeaceMajority.org (formerly, Congress for Peace) is gearing up to welcome even more voters of conscience and reason for the coming 2006 Congressional campaigns.
At the Second National Assembly of United for Peace and Justice opening in St. Louis today, PeaceMajority.org unveiled a suite of political action tools for people and organizations concerned about peace and security. The stated goal of the group is to help form a new political majority for peace.
The PeaceMajority.org new political action tools include ways for people to: contact their legislators, local press, and other select recipients; organize and find each other for local events, including meetings with their representatives; and to rate their legislators on peace issues, so they can decide whether to support their incumbents or recruit and support a challenger.
“We are turning the peace voice ... into the peace vote,” says Bill Scheurer, National Coordinator for the group. “Every other single-issue interest group in the land does this,” he adds. “So why not peace? At the end of the day, this is the way we get things done in this country, we vote.”
One of the key differences in the PeaceMajority.org approach is that it is not trying to become yet another peace group. “There are dozens of other peace groups already,” says Scheurer, “and they do a wonderful job. What we do is offer a toolset for these groups to use, along with others, in coming together to form a new political majority for peace.”
PeaceMajority.org is also nonpartisan, working with democrats, republicans, third parties, and independents, to build a new majority for peace.
With recent polling data that shows over half of Americans now believe the war in Iraq was a mistake, they may be on to something.
PeaceMajority.org is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that helps people and groups who care about peace and security, to form a new majority for peace.
